Male Gaze

The Male Gaze is a theory written by Laura Mulvey. It is a general theory that we can apply to music video's and discuss the effect the male gaze has on:

-How men look at women
-How women look at women
-How women look at themselves

The main attraction of the male gaze is to draw in an audience. This objectifies women from a male perspective. Having sex appeal in a music video for the narrative is mainly based in pop, r&b and rap. You are expected to see half cladded women in bikini's in these types of genre's because their lyrics are based around the female body.

(Music Video)
This music video focuses on women, they are wearing Lycra and the position of the girls are very explicit and sexual. The camera is always in a position in which shows the constant view of their breasts, legs, lips, eyes and pelvic thrusts. The women in this are objects of desire and the lyrics also reflects in the narrative of the music video.

When this clip plays they sing "push it push it," they push their breasts together. It seems very cheap and demeaning. The is also a lot of promiscuous movements such as a woman licking her cherry red lips, a woman squeezing her breast together and then winking at a man, three women doing pelvic thrust on a ball with the camera looking up at them. I think these sort of music videos should be deemed as inappropriate to be on during the day. There is a lot of sexual content in them. There are also men in this music video who are clad in shorts and have six packs but there is very little prevalence on them.

Spectator Theory and Postmodernism

There are three types of spectatorship:
- Passive spectator
-Negotiating spectator
-Libertarian spectator

Passive Spectator

A passive spectator is someone who accepts everything they see, they do not question or pick holes in what they see. They accept what they see for as it is, and the attitudes and values the videos shows.

Negotiating Spectator

A negotiating spectator has a mature response, they understand it is just a music video become involved with it. This means they are an active spectator as they can watch the video and accept the video but still question it.

Libertarian Spectator

A libertarian spectator understand the video in a completely different way and does interpret the text how the directer want it to be understood. The reaction to the video is a negative response, and does not accept the narrative.

Responding to Characters
-Recognition
-Alignment
-Allegiance

Recognition

We recognise the character as a credible and convincing character. For example Jack Black in the holiday I do not recognise him as a character in the Holiday as i can not take his role seriously.

Alignment

We are a part of the story by it being portrayed by the character. Like Dexter who is a kills serial killers.

Allegiance

Allegiance is whether we have loyalty to a character. For example in Fight Club my loyalty is with Jack when Tyler comes a long.

CD COVERS.

i like this CD cover by the fray, as it is very simple. The picture which is a light bulb is lite up with different bulbs, i think that the light symbolises people and life which connotes to the title "How To Save A Life." People often say "light of my life" i think the lights relate to being. i like the quirkiness of this and it's simplicity.
I find this CD cover very appealing, It is very tasteful and in the style of Pop Art. I enjoy the informality of this comic like cover. It's black and white colour is appealing as it is bold and it stands out. It shows the band is not overly flamboyant.
This is the back cover which is in the same pop art style, its very informal and simple. Follows the feature on from the front cover except there is more colour, there is a green heading which is the album name and there is also a pink kiss.
As this is Ed Sheeran's first album the covert is of him to signify that the CD is about him and the plus sign '+' could represent about him and his life.

Preperation, Group and Planning

My group consists of Rosie, and Nick. We have decided to use the song Frozen by As Gods.
We have listened and planned out our story board with a narrative that we feel conveys the lyrics. We have also got written permission to use the band's song.

The narrative is going to be about a boy who has ran someone over he then get haunted by his guilty conscience, the boy then kills his conscience, which effectively means he has killed him self.

This is a plan for what we are going to do through out the media course work. What we need to involve to make our course work as successful as possible. We have also bran stormed some ideas of what our music video will have. We got some inspiration from the film V for Vendetta by using a mask. We thought having this a s an intertexual refrence would be good as it fit in well with our ideal. We also talked about the editing process about having no wipes it was not the type of music video genre for wipes, it should be fast paced with fast cuts. We have not came to a conclusion if we wanted to involve the bad yet. We have decided after we see them playing live and record them if we feel that it will be best suited for the music video.
