Spectator Theory and Postmodernism

There are three types of spectatorship:
- Passive spectator
-Negotiating spectator
-Libertarian spectator

Passive Spectator

A passive spectator is someone who accepts everything they see, they do not question or pick holes in what they see. They accept what they see for as it is, and the attitudes and values the videos shows.

Negotiating Spectator

A negotiating spectator has a mature response, they understand it is just a music video become involved with it. This means they are an active spectator as they can watch the video and accept the video but still question it.

Libertarian Spectator

A libertarian spectator understand the video in a completely different way and does interpret the text how the directer want it to be understood. The reaction to the video is a negative response, and does not accept the narrative.

Responding to Characters
-Recognition
-Alignment
-Allegiance

Recognition

We recognise the character as a credible and convincing character. For example Jack Black in the holiday I do not recognise him as a character in the Holiday as i can not take his role seriously.

Alignment

We are a part of the story by it being portrayed by the character. Like Dexter who is a kills serial killers.

Allegiance

Allegiance is whether we have loyalty to a character. For example in Fight Club my loyalty is with Jack when Tyler comes a long.
